Homemade Glowing Paint

One night I experimented with Glow Water and watercolors. I used Glow Water to paint, and my art glowed under the blacklight.  I was pretty impressed and eager to give the boys a shot at it.  JZ happily followed me upstairs the other night when I suggested it.  Unfortunately, the paint hardly showed up at all.  Hmm, I'm not sure what the difference was between the night I painted solo and the night with JZ.
JZ still enjoyed painting, and he thought it was cool that his shirt lit up.  If you've followed me for long, you know that JZ usually only paints for a short while before moving on to something else.  This particular evening, he was really into his work.  After much focusing and painting he commented, "It's too bad the paint didn't glow."  I had an idea.  Several months ago I created glow in the dark puffy paint to write a glowing love note to my boys.  (Please note:  I called it puffy paint at the time, but it dried flat.)

Now this stuff really glows!

Homemade Glow in the Dark Paint is super simple:

(A half used bottle is perfect)
+
(All you need is a yellow highlighter and water)

Glowing Paint!

I left his paintings flat to dry over night then hung them up where we can enjoy them any time we do black light play.

Please note a black light IS required for this activity.

    1. If you mix glow in the dark paint it would glow outside. Glow water always requires a black light. :)

    6. Hi there,
I have tried looking for the link regards the yellow highlighter method (glow water) but it doesn't exist when I search for it. Please could you give some tips on how to create this and do I just mix the glow water with the glue to create the glow in the dark paint?
      Thanks,
      Kellie

    7. Hi Kellie,

      Here is the link: http://trainupachildlearnaswego.blogspot.com/2012/02/glow-in-dark-water-beads.html

Now when I make it I cut the spongy part open, and it is so much faster. Then yes just mix some glow water with glue. Don't add too much of the water, because you don't want it to be runny. It only takes a little bit of the glow water to work. Enjoy!

  2. Hi Allison,

I was planning on making glow in the dark silly putty as prizes for my church's Vacation Bible School. The recipe calls for glow in the dark paint as one of the ingredients. So far your recipe is the easiest that I have found online to make for glow in the dark paint. Just wondering though if it will only glow under black light or will it still glow when the lights are turned off?

    1. I break the plastic highlighter. Wear glasses or look away in case a small piece goes flying.
